The US map designed by Imus Geographics was all hand-made by one guy, David Imus. Maps are usually made with a computer algorithm which determines where things like city names are placed. This can cause problems when space is tight. Imus spent 2 years manually laying out his map, tweaking label positions, fonts, level of detail, and deciding which cities and towns to include. Very handsome use of colors too.

I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and thought it was really good. Rooney Mara was fantastic as Lisbeth Salander (although the bleached eyebrows aren’t really my thing). The pacing is better than the Swedish version as there aren’t any wasted scenes or boring moments; it was a 3 hour movie but it went by really fast. They actually made watching people type and examine old photos look dramatic. Great soundtrack by Trent Reznor too, of which you can download a 6 track sampler.

Calif. prison psychologist accused of faking rape

Police detectives and crime scene investigators spent hundreds of hours on the case, until one of Martinez’s prison co-workers came forward to say Martinez had been talking at work about faking a crime at her home to persuade her husband to move, Sacramento police Sgt. Andrew Pettit said Friday.
…
Missing from her home were two laptop computers, Martinez’s purse, an Xbox video game console, a camera and numerous credit cards that Martinez said the stranger had stolen.

In reality, the items were all at the home of her friend, Nicole April Snyder, authorities allege. Investigators say Martinez had Snyder punch her in the face with boxing gloves they bought for that purpose.

Sounds like Lucy and Ethel’s scheme to get Ricky to move to a nicer neighborhood backfired on them.

Land in Tokyo is some of the most expensive on the planet, so what do you do if you only have an 8 x 4 meter plot of land and you want to build a house? You build up. Architect Ryue Nishizawa designed a 5 story house with the living room/kitchen on the ground floor, a bedroom on the 2nd floor, bathroom on the 3rd, another bedroom on the 4th, and a roof-top terrace with a tiny room. Each floor is connected by stairs threaded through holes cut in the concrete floors. It has floor-to-ceiling windows throughout and plenty of plants screening it from the street, so it feels very open and airy. I love this kind of efficient use of small space.

I used my iPhone for a bit and then used my old iPod touch and it’s a huge difference. The iPod now seems all hazy. How the hell did I use it for so long? I like the design of the case too, it’s a really solid, dense-feeling hunk of metal and glass. I’m glad they didn’t redesign the case for the 4S. It’s also way faster than my iPod touch. I’d say it’s almost as fast as my iPad.

On a related note, this is what I imagined when I first heard of a drum machine: not an electronic panel that plays drum sounds, but a machine with drumsticks mounted on it that plays a real drum set.

Experts studying the dogs, who usually choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train, say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop – after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train.

Scientists believe this phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia’s new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city centre to the suburbs.

The dogs have also learned to stare straight ahead and not make eye contact.

Disney updated the ride and added stuff from the prequels, as well as revamping the queue area. The ride has several random, branching events for a total of 54 different combinations. For example, you can visit either the podrace on Tatooine, the battle on Hoth or a speederbike chase on Kashyyyk Pretty cool, though I’m wondering what took them so long. Couldn’t George Lucas have just shot new footage and stuck it in the Star Tours VCR 15 years ago?

What the hell? I see one of these “cable cars” coming down the street and I’m like, “Alright! I’m gonna ride the cable car!” Then I find out it’s a tour bus and it costs $40. That’s like the public transportation version of being fooled by a transvestite.

I was exploring SF’s Chinatown last weekend when I came upon a funeral procession. I could hear the marching band from several blocks away, and as the procession got closer some guys on motorcycles (who may or may not have been police, I’m not entirely sure) blocked off the streets so the casket, a couple limos, and several dozen cars could pass through.

That’s how I want to be honored when I die. I want to be paraded around town for several hours with a marching band, baton twirlers, trained elephants and clowns riding tiny bicycles. And I want to be propped up in the limo’s sunroof so people can look at me. Also, the limo should be constantly shooting fireworks and playing Kool & the Gang’s Celebration (just to be ironic).
